Visual Intent

Our individual connection to our natural environment is a primary relationship that is common to all our lives. Our connection is primordial. The once quiet beauty of stillness and serenity found in open untouched fields or dense, lush forests or clear rushing water is being overtaken by urban sprawl where technology and modern habits have altered the landscape at an alarming rate. We are all experiencing the loss of landscapes that feed the soul and calm the spirit. As an artist, I have come to understand my own creations as stemming from a strong desire to examine both the physical and emotional bonds to my personal environment. I set out to rediscover those quiet moments of connection to my environment. Documenting my external space as I go about my daily routines, I have sought to recapture those familiar, shared, felt moments with a sense of place.

The writer Wendell Berry believed that if you don’t know where you are then you don’t know who you are. He was not merely referring to an absolute location but alluding to a cognitive mapping where one comes to know through sensory perception, memories, and the value of investing a part of yourself within that place. This knowing, or sense of place, is the attribute that makes a place extraordinary. It evolves through a relationship between certain physical characteristics of the land and from humans implying significant meaning to a place through experience and cultural history.

I find that in simply “looking” at the surrounding landscape I am already shaping and interpreting my relationship with the physical environment. My prints explore the relationship of color on color and the shifting horizon lines as I move about in the natural environment. By contrasting static elements with fluid marks and defining the very basic division of space on the page, the world is portrayed in severely simplified images without many details yet informative. My work addresses landscape as the art of selection and balance and explores how representation can wander towards abstraction with my mind images progressing from the first impression of detailed precision to a printed image of a more gestural suggestion of ever changing luminous atmosphere. The subject matter ultimately evolves to become my sense of the water, the air, the stillness, and the moment spent in these found places.

It is this sense of place that I strive to capture when I set out to explore and document my surroundings. As an avid runner and walker, I have a strong kinship to the ground I walk upon; to me there is nothing more real than that physical sensation when the bottom of your foot strikes the earth below and grounds you in space. In a profound way, changing the perspective on something that is ordinary and familiar allows it to be recaptured, re-examined and represented in a format that becomes new and extraordinary to us. My investigation of a sense of place and self, invites the viewer to re-examine the banal topographies of the everyday landscape. When this captured information is displaced from the original site and replaced in the gallery setting, a slice of reality that we might normally dismiss suddenly demands our attention and re-examination. Horizon lines in the viewed landscape are grounding to the human eye and provide a sense of space. My images explore the connection of the horizon line and the viewer. The resulting prints are a form of diaries recording memories of moments spent in the outdoors.
